About My Gem Stone Box by Diane
This hobby turning business was born one night, at 2:00 am when I could not sleep. Flipping through the cable channels I came across The Jewelry Network. They were showing loose gem stones and I could not resist buying a small parcel. From there, you could say, the rest is history. I have read every scrap of information on gemstones I could get my hands on- including late nights surfing the web. I took a great on-line course by Barbara Smigel, http://www.bwsmigel.info/
and bought a gemology CD from her. That was step one, OK, now I've got all these pretty stones...what next? In Barbara's course she points out various suppliers and topics for continued research and through that contact I found a company called Tripps. They have a great and reasonable priced selection of tools and castings along with "How To's" to using them...so I tried. To my surprise, I picked it up quickly. I am a very visual learner, so I find it easier to see someone do something and learn from that. Ok, that went well, step three- not everyone wants gemstones set in castings-right? I had to branch out and explore different mediums...low and behold I happened upon wire sculpting. To me, this is a show-stopper, take beautiful gemstones either faceted or cabochons and wrap them up in gold and silver and copper. Outstanding! These things will sell themselves....right?
The Internet is a great and vast place to learn, to sell, to communicate, to connect.... but it is so huge it is overwhelming! I have spent as much time or more on learning about search engines and backlinks and indexing and graphics. Wow! If you would have asked me a year ago if this is what I envisioned I would have laughed. It has seemed to take on a life of it's own. I launched this site in August 2006.
I am planning to attend a few craft fairs during the holiday season and also plan to expand my presence on the Internet by linking and networking and although I am still a "newbie" I have learned a great deal taking these steps and have made new friends around the world. Even if the hobby-business isn't the most successful thing on the block, I am thankful for the people I have met and the fun I am having.
